Bugembe Women Resource Centre – Jinja Uganda

Bugembe Women’s Resource Centre was established in 1995 with a goal to empower women
and girls in Busoga region through creation of a central place where these ladies can convene
to be equipped with different skills such as tailoring, sweater kneading and computer use.
The Centre also pays attention to raising awareness against child sexual violence and
domestic violence in the locality.
The Centre was established on a generous funding from the Holy Cross United Methodist
Church that saw permanent structures erect in place, and these structures were initially
equipped by a donation of seven sowing machines from Rotary International.
The purpose then started to take form, with more ladies enrolling for the tailoring course at
the Centre which had now been upped from one tailoring machine to eight of them.
In 2013, Hope Nabirye, the manager of the Centre submitted an application to Gered through
the help of the area Member of Parliament of Bugembe. This application later birthed a huge
boost at the Centre in November 2017, when ten stronger machines were donated by the
Gered Gereedschap project to Bugembe Women Centre.
